MELTing away pain… and saggy skin!

Here's more about the science behind the segment I did recently on "The Rachael Ray Show," where I discussed the 50-Second Facelift:

Collagen plays a very key role in maintaining our skin’s structure and tone. So we all want this to be as healthy as possible.

The cells in our connective tissue called fibroblasts are the producers of this essential molecule. What we certainly know about collagen is, as we age, we produce less and less of it. Why?

What’s more important are the cells of our connective tissue, the role they play in our youthful, vibrant appearance and what’s missing in our daily life that could help keep these cells active, thus increasing collagen production. 

The importance of fibroblasts

As we age, we don’t produce as many fibroblasts thus, less cells producing collagen. It’s not just that the cells produce less collagen, there are also less cells producing it all around.

Fibroblasts are not only responsible for connective tissue synthesis in the dermis, they also function to remodel tissue if it’s damaged or broken down. One function is chemotaxis, the process of movement of the cells through chemical stimulus. If there’s no chemical stimulus, the cells don’t attach to anything and ultimately, they die. Then no collagen is produced.

Keeping it light to keep it firm

The connective tissue, scientifically called the Extracellular Matrix, has cells that interact with various molecules and can regulate some of the cellular functions we rely on for metabolism. 

The extracellular matrix (ECM), as well as soluble mediators like cytokines, can influence the behavior of cells in very distinct and cooperative ways. One group of ECM molecules that have key links to cytokines (key proteins in the ECM) and growth factors are the proteoglycans (also proteins in the ECM). These proteins are what attract water into the ECM to bind with collagen molecules forming the strong triple helix structure that keeps our skin supple yet firm and lifted. 

The one thing we do understand about fibroblasts is that they are very responsive to certainly types of compression and tensional pull performed right on the skin’s surface. They key to stimulating the superficial layers in a positive way is to keep the compression light and isolated to small regions.

In stimulating these cells, we propose the excitation is what keeps them proliferating (cellular reproduction) so we don’t decrease cell production or in other words, accelerate the aging process. This is a simple self-treatment you can do on your own and is what I described in “The Rachael Ray Show.”

So before you think of aging as a disease they will find a cure for, just take an active role in keeping these cells stimulated and healthy. Let’s all MELT away the sagging skin as well as our pain!
